The 150-year-old Appalchian tradition of shape-note singing is being presented at noon on Saturday, March 24, at the Knoxville Museum of Art as part of the "Appalachian Happening" at Big Ears 2018.
Sam Amidon will start off the acapella, four-part harmony singing, and local singers will share the tradition that has continued in East Tennessee. Copies of the shape-note hymn tunes will be available and all are invited and encouraged to join in. Whether or not you've ever heard of this old way of teaching singing, you may fall in love with the unusual chords and poetry.
Please come celebrate with us the traditional music of the southern highlands as we join with all the talented musicians and performers to Knoxville during this Big Ears 2018 event.
For more information, contact Tina Becker at 865-982-7777 or visit the Big Ears website, https://bigearsfestival.org/.
