"Southern Appalachian Studies Series: More than the Cherokee Trail of Tears: The Long Removal Era," will be presented by Julie L. Reed, Ph.D Associate Professor of history at University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Reed will discuss the longer process of Cherokee removal that arguably began before Andrew Jackson was elected President in 1828 and lasted beyond 1840 when the last detachments of Cherokee people arrived in the west. She will consider the decades long struggle that Cherokee people faced and the multiple choices made by elite and everyday Cherokee men and women to confront the conditions created by the removal era and consider how these diverse actions both aided and complicated Cherokee reconciliation in Indian Territory, what is today Oklahoma. A citizen of the Cherokee Nation, Reed will consider the decades-long struggle the Cherokee people faced. This program will be in the Sharon Lawson Room.
