Laura Lenoir and members of the Cemeteries of Athens Preservation Association will share their knowledge of preserving the history and heritage of cemeteries in this area. This organization is responsible for the conservation and protection of three Athens TN cemeteries (Cedar Grove, Hammonds and Sullins). Through research and training, the group has leaned how to repair endangered grave markers and has addressed over 250 stones. Repairs are carefully documented and records are stored at Athens City Hall (Municipal Building). COAPA was awarded a grant from the Tennessee Civil War Nation Heritage Area to publish the brochure "Veteran's at Rest: A Guide to Civil War Veterans and Soldiers Buried in the Athens City Cemeteries" which was given an Award of Distinction in 2012 by the East Tennessee Historical Society. Their mission is to preserve history, one stone at a time.

Program Cost: Museum Members (Free); Non-members $5 (includes a tour of the Museum)

This Heritage School Program is sponsored by The C. Scott & Muriel Mayfield Family Foundation.
