Dr. Archer Worthman Bishop

Physician

Archer Wortman Bishop, M.D., was born in Bristol, Tennessee, in 1911. He earned a B.S. degree from the University of Tennessee and an M.D. degree in 1936 from the University of Tennessee Medical College in Memphis. He interned at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Staten Island, New York.

Bishop returned to Tennessee and began his medical practice in Oliver Springs in 1937. He married Mary Ellen Baker the following year, and they had two children.

In 1945, the family moved to Clinton, where Bishop practiced medicine until his retirement in 1990. Throughout that time he was always willing to make house calls and would travel even the worst mountain roads to tend to his patients.

Dr. Archer Bishop was named a Pillar of Support by the Lucille S. Thompson Family Foundation.
