Walter Pulliam

Newspaper Editor and Publisher

Born in Knoxville in 1913, Walter Pulliam built a newspaper career that spanned nearly three-quarters of a century.

Pulliam graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1936. Over the course of his career he wrote for three Knoxville papers – the Times, the Journal, and the News-Sentinel – as well as for the Washington Post and the Harriman Record, which he owned.

An author of historical articles, including a history of Harriman, Pulliam founded the Tennessee Newspaper Hall of Fame and served as president of the Tennessee Press Association. It was under his leadership as president of the East Tennessee Historical Society that the society began its museum exhibits program.

Walter Pulliam was named an Honorary Pillar of Support by the Board of Directors of the East Tennessee Historical Society. Mr. Pulliam passed away in 2014.
